This is the challenge I am setting. But the big thing is that it must be available to most people in the world.
Now in the USA you can get all kinds of great gear to bug out, so much one does not know where to start. So this challenge will take little or no supplies from the USA. So if you live in Manilia, Melbourne, Mambai, Melton or wherever you can access what you need.
The first requirement is an ebay account and the necessary funds. We will aim for US $150 so whatever that convert to in the local currency.
The criteria for this bag are basic for a few days or more if you stretch it. We will aim for
- water,
- shelter,
- warmth (basic no major sub zero),
- cooking,
- navigation,
- lights,
- basic tools.
So here we go. We will only supply enough for one person a bag. If you have children you can use this as a guide to make smaller cheaper options. Each of the 'older person' bags will have the real bare necessities, water purification as first on the list. The reason for this, is that these bug out bags (BOBS) will act as a focal point, so in the event of a separation older children can supply the smaller ones with the real basics.
Part 1: The BAG
Now as this is a budget challenge we will have to avoid the top end brands. The picture above looks 'Top End' but in fact cost around $26 posted. I have bought these myself and find them fairly good so far. Here is the link to purchase (we are not affiliated to ebay)
Part 2: Water
Without water you will die in less than a week. This is an absolute necessity. Here we will go for what I think is the best all around portable filtration device (we are not going into finding water here as it would be endless), the life straw at around $25
Part 3: Shelter
An emergency blanket $2.40, 2 x Ponchos $1.00, 1 x wire saw $1.70
Part 4: Fire/Cooking
A fire-starter: Magnesium Flint Stone $1.20, small zip lock bag with cotton balls.
Cooking/eating pot $19.00
Sub Total
$76.30
